The skin is one of the most protective and active barriers of the body. The most important functions of the skin are protection, sensation, temperature regulation, and secretion. There are three primary layers with distinct functions: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and gives the skin its texture and moisture and also supports skin color. The dermis is the dense seconda layers and gives the skin its strength and elasticity; it contains a network of elastic fibers (connective tissue) that gives the skin support, flexibility, and strength. This layer also contains fibroblasts which produce collagen, elastin, and other matrix proteins and enzymes. The hypodermis is the deepest layer and lies below the dermis, it's also known as the fat layer. The hypodermis helps insulate the body from heat and cold, provides protective padding, and serves as an energy storage area.
There are two important processes in skin regeneration: cell renewal and cell turnover. Cell renewal is the process of new cells being produced at the bottommost layer of the epidermis (basal cell layer) and cell turnover is the proccess of the aged new cells, migrating as dead skin cells to the surface to be shed.
Skin Types:
There are 4 different skin types: oily, combination, normal, and dry. Oily skin produces as excessive amount of oil all over the face every day, all day long--creating a shiny look and it can also look coarse and rough in texture along with large pores, acne, and blackheads. Combination skin experiences an oily skin type in the T-zone and a dry skin type on the cheeks--blackheads and blemishes may be present in the T-zone area and pores may look enlarged on the nose, forehead, and chin. Normal skin is not excessively oily or dry, acne is uncommon, pores are general small and unnoticeable, and the skin looks healthy and smooth. Dry skin loses ability to produce oils and retain moisture, it may look smooth with small pores and have a tight, leathery appearance.
pH Factor:
The pH factor of skin is important because it helps maintain a proper balance of the acid mantle, which aids in protecting the body from bacteria and moisture loss. Our skin is slightly acidic and on average has a pH value of 5.5.
Aging:
Aging of the skin occurs in two different ways: biological (intrinsic) and environmental (extrinsic). According to the American Academy of Dermatology, production of collagen and elastin slows down a dramatic 65% between the ages of 20 and 80, the thickness of the skin decreases 6% every 10 years, and the sun causes 90-95% of wrinkles, lines, and discolorations on our bodies. Intrinsic aging accounts for 10% of visible signs of aging and are often hereditary due to genetic information passed down through generations.
Free radicals (reactive oxygen species - ROS), are considered to be a major contributor to the aging process. ROS are created by UV exposure, pollution, stress, smoking, and normal metabolic processes. Free radicals bring about changes that lead to degredation of the skin's collagen and elastin (firmness and elasticity). Antioxidants neutralize and stabilize the free radicals.
